Indio is wasting no time in celebrating its economic development efforts in downtown

INDIO — Veteran City Councilmember Lupe Ramos Amith recently told Uken Report that “Indio is growing up.” Yes, it is. To that end, the city is celebrating the early success of its economic development efforts downtown and recognizing the conclusion of economic development week with a ribbon cutting and 2nd Saturdays · Center Stage Celebration.

Economic development is a top priority of the Indio City Council and City staff. As the No. 30 Fastest Growing City in America, our City Team is committed to driving a vital and competitive economy that increases prosperity and quality of life for all of our residents, businesses and community partners., according to Carl S. Morgan, Director of Economic Development.

The public is encouraged to join city leaders, local business leaders, and their neighbors for this event in downtown Indio at Smurr & Miles with music beginning at 5 p.m. on May 14.  Attendees will be able to experience a one-of-a-kind confetti blast at 6 p.m.  The first 100 people there will also receive special souvenirs recognizing this next act for the city of Indio.

Indio to Celebrate Economic Development Efforts

Attend the ribbon cutting to see the currently obscured letters, “D-I-O’ revealed.

At 6 p.m., the ribbon will be cut on the new INDIO landmark, which is directly in front of the site of the most recent addition to downtown, Gabino’s Creperie.  Gabino’s, a standout in Palm Springs, just entered into a five-year lease with the City of Indio to open a second Coachella Valley location in the desert’s original downtown.

Immediately following the ribbon cutting, the band plays on for 2nd Saturdays · Center Stage, featuring Disneyland’s The Jazz Cartel and local radio personality Tina Turntables.  The Jazz Cartel is a nine-piece Frank Sinatra style swing band bringing energy to two sets sure to get Lindy Hop novices and experts alike up on their feet.

Local favorites Smokey Lips BBQ, Ruberry Salsa, Popping off Pies, La Quinta Brewing Company and Tamale Festival winner Outside the Masa return to our outdoor food hall.  We’ll also welcome new 2nd Saturdays Indio based vendors– Straight and Marrow and Buzzbox Premium Cocktails.
