John Greenwood Could Become First Person Elected from District 5

PALM DESERT — Uken Report distributed a series of questions to each of the candidates seeking the District 5 seat. John Greenwood’s answers follow:

UR: Why are you a better candidate than your opponent(s)?

John Greenwood: I believe I bring a combination of experience, qualifications, and perspective that would serve Palm Desert well. I grew up here, graduated from Palm Desert High School, became a business owner, raised my family here, and have had the privilege of serving on the Palm Desert Planning Commission for 14 years.

As an architect and small business owner, I understand how City decisions affect neighborhoods, local businesses, development, and the people who will live with those decisions for years to come. My Planning Commission experience has also taught me the importance of listening to all sides, asking difficult questions, and looking beyond the immediate issue to understand the long-term impact on our community.

I respect anyone willing to step forward and serve. What I offer voters is a deep understanding of Palm Desert, a long record of public service, and a practical approach focused on thoughtful decision-making, accountability, and keeping residents at the center of every decision.

UR: What is your vision for the city?

John Greenwood: My vision is for Palm Desert to remain a safe, welcoming, and well-managed city where families can build a life, businesses can succeed, and growth is thoughtful and respects the character of our neighborhoods and natural surroundings.

That means responsible planning, reliable infrastructure, strong public safety, and careful stewardship of taxpayer dollars. It also means ensuring that residents understand how decisions are made, have meaningful opportunities to be heard, and know that City Hall is responsive to the community it serves.

As Palm Desert continues to evolve, I want us to embrace opportunities that strengthen our economy and quality of life while protecting the qualities that make our city such a special place to live.

UR: How much do you plan to spend on your campaign?

John Greenwood: I expect to spend approximately $50,000 on this campaign. My goal is to run a thoughtful and efficient campaign focused on meeting residents, listening to their concerns, and clearly communicating my priorities for Palm Desert.

I believe campaign spending should be transparent and responsible. All contributions and expenditures are publicly reported, and I welcome that level of accountability throughout the campaign.

UR: If a data center was proposed in Palm Desert, would you approve or reject it, and why?

John Greenwood: Based on Palm Desert’s available land, existing development patterns, and applicable zoning, I believe the likelihood of a large-scale data center being proposed in the City is relatively low.

That said, I approach every project fairly and with an open mind. Any proposal that comes before the City should be evaluated on its individual merits, its compatibility with surrounding uses, infrastructure demands, environmental impacts, and the overall benefit it provides to the community.

While I would never prejudge an application before reviewing the facts, I do not currently see a large data center as a likely part of Palm Desert’s future.

UR: Who or what prompted you to run?

John Greenwood: Palm Desert has been a central part of my life. I grew up here, graduated from Palm Desert High School, built my business here, and raised my family here. This community has given a great deal to me and my family, and I felt this was the right time to give back in a larger way.

My 14 years on the Planning Commission also showed me how important thoughtful, experienced local leadership is to the future of the city. So many of the people who came before me have done an excellent job helping shape Palm Desert into the community it is today, and I am honored that many of them have placed their trust in me to help continue that progress. I am honored to be endorsed by Mayor Evan Trubee, Joe Pradetto, Jan Harnik, and Gina Nestande, as well as past Council members Kathleen Kelly, Sabby Jonathan, and Van Tanner.

Ultimately, I am running because I care deeply about Palm Desert. I want to help protect what makes our city special, build on the good work that has brought us to this point, and prepare Palm Desert responsibly for the future.

UR: What have you learned about running for public office that you did not know before?

Uken Report: I knew that running for public office would require me to explain my priorities, but what has stood out most is how much of campaigning is really about listening.

Residents can look at the same citywide issue from very different perspectives based on their neighborhood, business, family, or personal experience. Those conversations have reinforced for me that a council member needs to be accessible, willing to listen carefully, prepared to explain decisions, and respectful of people who may see an issue differently.

It has also reminded me that good local government depends on maintaining an open dialogue with the community, not just during an election, but throughout public service.

UR: What would you do to generate revenue and stimulate economic growth as costs rise?

John Greenwood: The first step is to be realistic and transparent about the City’s financial outlook. I would support clear multiyear budget forecasts, realistic assumptions about rising public safety and infrastructure costs, and a disciplined approach to protecting our reserves. Before looking for new sources of revenue, we should continually review how we are spending the dollars we already have and make sure our priorities are aligned with the needs of residents.

On the revenue side, I believe the best long-term strategy is to strengthen Palm Desert’s economy. We should make it easier for quality businesses to open, expand, and stay in our city by identifying unnecessary delays and barriers in City processes, supporting our existing businesses and commercial districts, and attracting development that creates lasting economic value.

I would also evaluate major projects based on their complete financial impact—not simply the revenue they may generate, but also the infrastructure and City services they require. Economic growth should ultimately strengthen Palm Desert’s financial position and quality of life, not create additional long-term burdens for residents.

UR: What is the best quality about your opponent(s)?

John Greenwood: I respect anyone willing to put their name forward and serve the community. Residents benefit when candidates bring their ideas forward and engage in a respectful discussion about Palm Desert’s future.
