LA QUINTA — If you hate working out in the claustrophobic confines of a sweaty, sometimes smelly indoor gym, fret no more. The city of La Quinta announced the launch of a new outdoor Fitness Court in La Quinta Park, joining the National Fitness Campaign to make world-class fitness free for everyone.

Residents are welcome to attend an Opening Day Launch Party on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. for a fun Mayor’s Challenge event, prizes, Fitness Court giveaways, and an opportunity to be featured in local and national media.

The outdoor gym is still under construction. However, the city was able to provide a rendering of the site you can view here.

“Health and wellness are priorities for the City of La Quinta,” La Quinta Mayor Linda Evans said in a prepared statement.  “Being selected as the first location in the Coachella Valley for a Fitness Court enhances our efforts to continue to promote well-being to our residents and visitors.  This unique exercise platform offers free access to fitness for everyone.  A healthy community is a prosperous community and we’re proud to partner with National Fitness Campaign to further activate our public spaces for all to enjoy.”

Outdoor fitness courts are springing up around the country, including in Illinois, New Jersey, Minnesota and Indiana. The goal of the campaign is to bring free fitness to 300 cities by 2018.

The Fitness Court is an outdoor bodyweight circuit training gym featuring all-levels workouts that can be completed in just seven minutes a day. La Quinta’s Fitness Court is part of a multi-million-dollar nationwide effort to get people excited about health and fitness. With the free mobile app, neighbors are learning simple routings and competing in challenges — all in their own local park.

“We are delighted to bring our national campaign to the city of La Quinta, and to be launching this Fitness Court for residents and visitors to the Coachella Valley,” said Mitch Menaged, founder of National Fitness Campaign. “NFC is excited to welcome this active community to our nationwide digital gym network, and I invite everyone to download our free mobile Fitness Court app for guided challenges and free coaching. See you on the Fitness Court!”
