Palm Springs Public Library Celebrates Black History Month

Palm Springs Public Library is joining in the celebration of Black History Month by offering activities throughout the month to the community.

PALM SPRINGS, CA – Monday, February 1, 2022 – The library is excited to present author Dwayne A. Ratleff on Monday, February 28th at 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Zoom. In celebration of Black History Month, this local author will be discussing his award-winning book Dancing to the Lyrics. A timeless and timely coming-of-age tale told through the eyes of the young protagonist, Grant Cole, the story offers a first-hand account of an African American gay youth who perseveres in spite of personal and family obstacles as well as the larger challenges of his era. In February, teens can create their own art inspired by Alma Woodsey Thomas. Craft kits will be available beginning Thursday, February 10th, while supplies last, for grades 6-12. Alma Woodsey Thomas (September 22, 1891 – February 24, 1978) was an African American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is now recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the “exuberant”, colorful, abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career teaching art.

The Library also has a variety of books, movies, and other materials that can be reserved online that celebrate Black History Month, and then can be picked-up using the Library-A-Go-Go service. Simply reserve the materials online 24/7 and then make an appointment to pick-up at the Library.
