Palm Springs Police Department Arrests Theft Suspect, After Altercation Leaves Employee Injured

PALM SPRINGS — A 31-year-old theft suspect was arrested shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday after a physical struggle that sent one employe to a local hospital.

The suspect was identified as Andrew Augustin Mason, a resident of Palm Springs. Mason was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and robbery, in connection with the incident. Additionally, Mason was the subject of one felony warrant and two misdemeanor warrants, at the time of his arrest,  Tamara Wadkins, Police Media Relations PIO, reported.

It all started when the Palm Springs Police Department responded to reports of a confrontation at a business on the 300 block of South Palm Canyon Drive on April at 4:17 p.m. Witnesses at the scene reported an altercation involving a male suspect, who was trying to get away with concealed merchandise from the premises, according to Wadkins.

During the incident, three employees confronted the suspect. A physical struggle ensued, resulting in one employee being pushed to the ground, another being headbutted and suffering a laceration from a knife, wielded the suspect wielded. The injured employee was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
