‘Let us have no more talk on cutting back pride, it’s too disruptive an issue.’ — Ralph Perry
PALM DESERT — There are many volunteers serving on city committees, commissions and boards for the city of Palm Desert. All of these, including the elected City Council carry the duty to represent all the residents of the city in non-partisan way. Residents include children, moms and dads, our youth, seniors, working people, every race, creed, color, religion, the sick and disabled and our pet companions. Also, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, No Party Preference and the LGBTQ community. I think that covers everyone!
Recently a Pride banner was displayed at Palm Desert City Hall to acknowledge the pride community. The recent push-back against the pride banner was born out of surprise in viewing this large banner at city hall. Reactions varied, some delighted, some surprised, some not happy, some ambivalent, everyone has their own viewpoint. The city carries an inclusive policy founded by previous members of the city council.
As a Palm Desert Greens Democratic Club president and city volunteer, I agree with Republican Greg Wallis that the push back against the Pride banner is a divisive matter. One can understand individual reactions which were many and varied. Greg Wallis took a risk in defending the gay community and that is to be acknowledged. The Coachella Valley has the one of the largest LGBTQ communities in the country. Mr. Wallis was seeking to turn down the temperature on this potentially highly charged matter.
As of now, may I ask that everyone take a breath, try and forgive and move on? We must focus on unity rather than division. Let us have no more talk on cutting back pride, it’s too disruptive an issue. We also need to consider those employed on behalf of residents. There might be LGBTQ people who work for the city. They should be free to do their jobs without worry or concern. This includes their coworkers along with friends and family of our dynamic, hardworking city staff.
Happy holidays! Wishing peace and goodwill for all.
