COACHELLA VALLEY – Classes have barely dismissed for the summer recess but that’s when scores of volunteers will heed the call from United Way of the Desert to begin cleaning classrooms.

United Way Rallies Scores to Spruce Up Schools

Some 2017 Day of Action volunteers in the Coachella Valley.

On June 21, the longest day of the year, volunteers from throughout the desert will participate in the Day of Action. The annual event mobilizes volunteers into action to create meaningful impact throughout the community.

Last year, tens of thousands of volunteers around the world joined more than 450 United Way agencies from 19 countries to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every one of those communities.

“A few months ago we sat down with our local school districts to find out what they needed as the school year came to a close and all of them agreed that school beautification would be the most helpful,” said United Way of the Desert CEO, Kristal Granados. “Over 100 volunteers from various companies and organizations throughout the Coachella Valley have already signed on to donate their time and energy to making sure our children return to school with clean buildings and buses.”

United Way of the Desert will work with Palm Springs Unified, Desert Sands Unified, and Coachella Valley Unified school districts to create meaningful activities centered on one of the organization’s strategic measures known as Operation Achieve.

The goal for this strategy is that all Coachella Valley children are ready and prepared to succeed in school and life. Part of that readiness to success is having environments free from distraction that are clean and safe. Of course school districts work year round with staff on hand to create those environments, but all have agreed that extra help is not only appreciated, but sometimes necessary.

Through Day of Action, and all year long, United Way of the Desert is working to ensure that kids have access to the same educational opportunities no matter their district. To learn more about United Way’s Day of Action, please visit here.
