PALM SPRINGS —As residents and business owners juggle the stresses of the lingering effects of COVID-19, one thing they won’t have to worry about is receiving an eviction notice — at least for now.

To help alleviate economic effects that the spread of COVID-19 has had on residents and businesses in this community, the City Council voted unanimously on May 26 to extend the city’s eviction moratorium to June 30, effective immediately.

The eviction moratorium allows residential rent deferral under the following circumstances:

  • The tenant is unable to pay all or a portion of rent due to COVID-19 related reasons.
  • The tenant notifies the landlord within 15 days after rent is due.
  • The tenant provides the landlord a reason related to COVID-19 and (if requested) provides documentation.

Commercial rent deferral is allowed under the following circumstances:

  • The tenant is unable to pay all or a portion of rent due to COVID-19 related reasons.
  • The tenant notifies the landlord within seven days after rent is due.
  • The tenant provides the landlord a reason related to CIVID-19 and (if requested) provides documentation.

Tenants have up to 180 days after the COVID-19 emergency is over to pay back deferred rent. The Council will consider extending eviction protections again on June 25.

Palm Springs isn’t the only city to extend its eviction moratorium.

The San Diego City Council on May 19 extended a moratorium on residential and commercial evictions through June 30 in an effort to protect businesses and renters affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Contra Costa County’s moratorium on evictions directly caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has been extended from May 31 until July 15.
