More than 500 pies will be distributed from Indio Senior Center
INDIO –Hundreds of pumpkin and apple pies will be distributed to area seniors on Monday, Nov. 23 as part of the Indio Senior Center’s first Thanksgiving Pie Giveaway.
Staff members from the Indio Teen Center will help hand out 520 of the sweet treats to adults 55 and over, in a drive-through giveaway at the Senior Center from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
The Senior Center’s annual Thanksgiving feast is an opportunity for those who are not able to spend it with family members, celebrate the holiday with their Senior Center families. Unfortunately because of COVID restrictions, the traditional Senior Center feast won’t be held this year.
“This Thanksgiving will be especially lonely for our seniors, and while we can’t recreate the feast for them, we wanted them to know we are thinking of them,” said Senior Center director Argelia Jimenez.
Donations from community members, as well as Vallarta Market, helped fund the giveaway.
The Senior Center has been ground zero this year for help that goes beyond pies On at least three occasions since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indio Senior Center is holding a Care Package Giveaway for seniors 55 and older.
During the third distribution, Senior Center staff and volunteers aimed to increase the number of care packages distributed to accommodate up to 800 seniors on a first-come, first served basis..
Donations of non-perishable food, face masks, hand sanitizers, water, word puzzle books, lotion, towels, blankets, socks, toilet paper, and any items that will help make seniors more comfortable in the months to come will be accepted through Sept. 18. The Indio Senior Center remains closed for regular programming, however, several classes and programs are being held virtually via the Senior Center’s Facebook page.
