Palm Springs Fire Department Continues Swiftwater Training Ahead of El Niño
PALM SPRINGS —The Palm Springs Fire Department recently completed River and Flood Water Rescue training as part of our preparation for flooding and fast-moving water emergencies. Palm Springs Firefighters train throughout the year to remain prepared to respond safely and effectively to these emergencies.
This Year’s training included hands on water rescue exercises in the Coachella Canal, where our firefighters experienced real world scenarios in an actual moving water environment. This allows our crews to effectively utilize our rescue equipment and techniques under realistic conditions. A special thank you to the Coachella Valley Water District for partnering with us on this life saving training.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of becoming a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-27. El Niño occurs when parts of the Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual, which can change weather patterns and increase the potential for significant storm activity. In Palm Springs, heavy rainfall can quickly impact washes, roadways, and low-lying areas, creating dangerous swiftwater conditions.
The Palm Springs Fire Department reminds residents and visitors to never drive or walk through flooded roadways or moving water.
