SoCal Car and Dog Show could be a first in Cathedral City

CATHEDRAL CITY — This community, the second-largest in Coachella Valley, is home to the Hot Air Balloon Festival and Food Truck Fiesta, Halloween Spooktacular, Tejano Music Fest, among other signature events. It now could be adding another — the SoCal Car and Dog Show.

The City Council on Wednesday, Oct. 27 will consider a Special Use Permit to hold the inaugural Show on Jan. 29,
2022.

SoCal Car and Dog Show Proposed in Cathedral CityAdrian Rendon, SoCal Branding, is proposing to host the car and dog show from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. using several downtown assets including the Festival Lawn, Avenida Lalo Guerrero, and the third floor of the parking structure. Although this would be the first event produced by Adrian in Cathedral City, he has been a vendor for years at the COD Street Fair and other city events. He has hosted two previous car shows including one at the Indio Fairgrounds.

Luis Castellanos is the director of the dog show that features only “Bullies” (English bulldogs, French bulldogs, and Bully bulldogs). He has previously hosted two dog shows in Palm Springs.

As proposed, the SoCal Auto & Bully Show would hold the dog show on the Festival Lawn with commercial vendors on Avenida Lalo Guerrero between the Parking Garage entrance and George Montgomery Trail, and a car show featuring approximately 250-300 cars on the third floor of the parking garage. The car show will feature a mix of classics, imports, domestic, and motorcycles. They have invited the Palm Springs Corvette Club and the Palm Springs Crusin’ Association. They will also showcase Off-Road vehicles on the dirt area between the Festival Lawn and Avenida Lalo Guerrero.

The event will have a beer garden with on the third floor of the parking structure, with charitable proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City. A DJ will provide music there with a mix of R&B/Hip Hop and Country music.

The organizers also plan to have 30 commercial vendors located on Avenida Lalo Guerrero to sell merchandise as well as eight arts and crafts vendors and about a half dozen food trucks, according to a staff report.

The Dog Show will feature 150-200 dogs staggered over the day for showing. All dogs will be secured on a leash at all times and must be up-to-date on their vaccinations. The organizers will be responsible for cleaning up all feces during and after the show. The show will have professional dog judges. All dogs must be certified by UKC or AKC. Awards will be given for top dogs in various categories. The dog show does not allow purchasing of dogs on site.

Other activities include face paintings for kids, mechanical bull, and jumpers. Staff recommends that the insurance coverage specifically covers mechanical bull riding and jumpers or the organizers may need to withdraw those two activities.
