INDIO – Homeowners in parts of Indio, Coachella and the unincorporated communities of Carver Tract, Mecca and North Shore can qualify for free energy efficiency retrofits aimed at reducing their energy costs and improving air quality.
Applications for the Coachella Valley Residential Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program are being accepted. To apply, call the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Air Resources Hotline at 909-396-2390.
The program is funded with a nearly $1 million funding award from the SCAQMD, which SCAQMD Board Member and Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez helped secure early this year. This one-time program will help retrofit approximately 350 homes.

By reducing emissions, we will improve public health in the communities most impacted by air pollution.”
The Coachella Valley Residential Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program will install upgrades to make homes more energy efficient to improve air quality. The improvements will be at no charge to the homeowner.
Measures could include replacing lightbulbs with LEDs, smart thermostats, insulation of attics, and air sealing to reduce the amount of air that leaks in and out of homes.
The work will be performed by Alcal Specialty Contracting, which was awarded the contract and is part of this innovative public-private partnership with Johns Manville and the SCAQMD. Other project partners include Comite Civico del Valle, Imperial Irrigation District and the Southern California Gas Company.
The program is targeted to homes located in communities among the 25 percent most impacted by air pollution. The eligible communities are portions of the Cities of Indio and Coachella and the unincorporated communities of Carver Tract, Mecca and North Shore. A map of the eligible area is attached.

The program is limited to single-family houses.
The SCAQMD funding for this project comes from air quality penalty settlements, mitigation fees and other sources.
