For Second Time, Gov. Gavin Newsom Subject of Recall

SACRAMENTO —Today, saying it is time to both “Rescue California” and “Save America,” citizens from across the state served Governor Gavin Newsom with official recall papers.

“Gavin Newsom has abandoned the state to advance his Presidential ambitions, leaving behind a $73 Billion budget deficit and a public safety, immigration and education crisis,” said Rescue California’s Campaign Director Anne Dunsmore. “Over 400 Californians of every political persuasion and from all walks of life, have joined together to serve as official proponents of this Recall.”

Newsom has served since 2019 as the 40th governor of California. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the 49th lieutenant governor of California from 2011 to 2019 and the 42nd mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

This is the second time Gavin Newsom has been subject to a Recall effort. In 2021 nearly 5 million
Californians voted to remove Newsom from office. He only survived after outspending recall proponents by more than 20-1.

Recall proponents laid out multiple reasons for recalling Newsom, who has over two years and three more budgets left in his term of office, saying he:

  • Granted 700,000 illegal immigrants free health care at a cost to taxpayers of $3 billion annually,
while cutting vital programs for veterans, school children, the disabled and the homeless.
  • Kept schools closed during Covid longer than other states forcing California students to fall further behind in basic skills such as language and mathematics.
  • Closed prisons and ordered the release of thousands of dangerous criminals onto our streets.
  • Weakened our public safety laws, creating an epidemic of smash and grab crimes and violent assaults.
  • Forced Californians to suffer under the highest taxes in the nation and the highest home prices outside Hawaii, while he undermines Prop. 13.
  • Spends billions on government homeless programs that have repeatedly failed, leaving the state with the highest percentage of homelessness in the country.

“California needs a full-time governor who is fully focused on the serious problems the state and its
citizens are facing. This may be our last opportunity to rescue and restore our state, while we highlight for the rest of the country the destruction Newsom has left in his wake,” Dunsmore said in a statement.
